Wide pneumatic tyres, suspension and a sturdy frame make dirt tracks and cobblestones more pleasant. Here you will find rugged e-scooters that, according to the seller, still have German road approval.

What “off-road” means for e-scooters

Manufacturers use “off-road” to market scooters with chunky pneumatic tyres (usually 10 to 11 inches), full suspension, a wide deck and a more powerful battery. Such models handle gravel, forest tracks, cobblestones and broken cycle paths much more comfortably than light city scooters. Real terrain like you would ride on a mountain bike is still off limits for them, though: the small wheels and the design are not made for it.

Caution: many off-road scooters are not road-legal

A large share of scooters advertised as off-road reach 40, 50 km/h or more and have motors of 1000 W and above. Such vehicles are not small electric vehicles and may not be ridden on cycle paths, roads, farm tracks or forest paths – only on private land. That is why this page only shows listings whose title mentions road approval or an ABE, and hides models that are obviously too fast.

Still, check every listing carefully: the top speed must be 20 km/h, and the ABE must apply to exactly the variant on offer.

What matters on rugged scooters

For poor surfaces and longer distances, these features are important:

  • Pneumatic tyres of 10 inches or more, ideally tubeless for fewer punctures
  • Front and rear suspension
  • Disc brakes on both wheels or hydraulic brakes
  • Water protection to IP standard (e.g. IPX5) for riding in the rain
  • High load capacity and a wide, non-slip deck

Weight and transport

Rugged scooters usually weigh 20 to 30 kg; they can be folded but are hardly comfortable to carry. They are therefore best suited to people who ride straight from their front door to their destination and can park at ground level. If you want to take the scooter on the train, a lighter model is the better option.

Care when things get dirty

If you often ride on gravel and wet tracks, clean the scooter regularly with a damp cloth, check the brakes and folding joint and check the tyre pressure. That way even a rugged scooter stays reliable for a long time.
