E-scooters for children compared

5 E-scooters from established makers · Selection index 99.3 −0.7% 7 d · avg €186 · as of 18/10/2026

Electric kids’ scooters are popular presents. Here you will find models for children and teenagers – plus the key rules, because children are not allowed to ride them on public roads and paths.

Where can children ride an e-scooter?

In Germany, e-scooters under the eKFV may only be ridden in public traffic from the age of 14. Kids’ e-scooters generally have no operating permit and no insurance plate – they are intended for private land, such as your own yard, a garden or closed-off areas. They are not allowed on pavements, cycle paths or roads, not even in a speed-limited form.

This matters for parents because liability insurance may also cause problems in the event of an accident in a public space. If in doubt, check with your insurer what is covered.

The right model by age

Manufacturers state age ranges and a maximum weight. For children aged 6 to 10, light models with 6.5-inch wheels, a low speed of around 10 to 16 km/h and a start mode with gentle acceleration are common. For older children and teenagers there are larger scooters with 8-inch wheels.

  • Adjustable speed levels – choose the slowest one to begin with
  • Motor starts only after a push-off (kick-to-start), preventing unintended take-off
  • Height-adjustable handlebar that grows with your child
  • Reliable brake that your child can reach easily
  • Maximum weight well above your child’s current weight

Safety gear

Even on private land, a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads are essential. Children often underestimate speed and braking behaviour. Ideally, practise starting, braking and swerving together in an open area before your child rides alone. Lights and reflectors help when it gets dark earlier outside.

Battery and charging

Kids’ scooters have small batteries with ranges of around 8 to 20 kilometres. Charging should be done by adults: with the original charger, on a non-flammable surface and not unattended overnight.

Alternative: the classic kick scooter

For the way to school and journeys in public spaces, a classic kick scooter is the permitted alternative. It trains balance and coordination and – unlike a motorised scooter – may be ridden by children on the pavement.

Gift tip

When buying as a present, make sure the battery can be pre-charged so the first ride doesn’t end at the charging cable.
